ALLERGIES General condition information:
Allergies have recently surfaced as something worth more than a passing interest. Quite dramatic symptoms have been traced to them and a great deal of time and effort is not being spent on addressing allergy problems. What exactly is an allergy? It is a reaction between an allergen and an atopic reagent. The allergen is the external substance which provokes a reaction in the body – the atopic reagent. The reactions can be acute or slow, for instance the person who has an allergy to pollen will experience a quick reaction. Other allergies take much longer to produce symptoms which show that something is wrong. These slow reactions are often much more dangerous. A most simple way to describe an allergy is to say that a person has a high sensitivity to something - possibly plants, foods, fabrics, detergents, medicines or paints. The most innocuous things can cause allergies such as fish, fats, animal proteins, grains, coffee, milk, house dust and mites. Symptoms of an allergy can include a running nose, wheezing, skin rashes and irritation, excessive gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and headaches. What can we do about allergies? First of all we must find out exactly what the allergy is and then treat it by counter-action. Treatment would obviously depend on the nature of the allergy. Generally, however, small adjustments to the diet and life-style can have a beneficial influence on one’s health. Dietary advice This will obviously depend on the nature of the allergy, eg. Those with digestive problems may be allergic to wheat or dairy produce and therefore, should eliminate these foods from their daily diet. Migraine sufferers may have an underlying allergy to chocolate or alcohol. Those suffering with eczema may benefit from eliminating chocolate and citrus fruits from their diets. Allergies often disappear as soon as the sufferer adopts an organic or wholesome diet. A diet packed with additives and synthetic ingredients is certain to predispose allergies.
