| COLITIS AND ULCERATIVE
COLITIS General condition information:
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the colon that attacks the mucous membrane lining of the large intestine, which comprises the colon and the rectum. Colitis upsets the normal function of the lining and it becomes raw, red, inflamed and ulcerated. Sufferers experience attacks of uncontrollable diarrhoea, often with considerable loss of blood and mucus, and sometimes severe abdominal pain. Some research has suggested that a fault in the body’s immune system could allow damage to the mucous membrane. Other investigations have looked at the possibility that bacteria or a virus could be the culprit. Stress, smoking, diet and environmental factors have also been suggested as possible contributory factors. Colitis can be characterised by frequent watery stools and lower abdominal discomfort, and pains similar to colic pains. The irritated mucous lining of the colon tends to cause a smellier stool than usual. Dietary advice Patients with colitis and ulcerative colitis often benefit
from a wheat-free diet, sometimes preceded by a cleansing diet. Fasting
is sometimes helpful – even just one day a week. Feel free to drink
fruit juices, except for citrus juices. Drink fruit or vegetable juices
at breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper time. Specific items to avoid are
tap water, salt, sugar, spices, alcohol, pork products, citrus fruits,
sweets, chocolates, white sugar and flour, meat and butter, as well as
nicotine. Minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc are greatly
needed. Eat soya, brown rice, millet, sesame seeds, and sprouted seeds.
