| DEPRESSION General condition information:
Depression is probably one of the most unpleasant experiences a person can go through. There are various kinds of depression. The two main ones are endogenous and exogenous. The first results from hormonal and biochemical changes within the body. The second is influenced by outside factors. It is often difficult to differentiate between stress, anxiety and depression, because in all of these problems the emotions play a big part. There is no doubt, though, that faulty diet – an imbalance of nutrients, vitamins, trace elements and enzymes – play a major role in any depressive illness. Although depression often has a psychological cause, it can become a predominantly physical problem. Health problems that may be experienced would be gastro-intestinal symptoms, nervousness, circulatory problems, headaches, and also sleep disturbances. Depression can also be helped by various methods, eg. Relaxation, visualisation, meditation, exercise and some herbal and homœopathic remedies can be used to help support these therapies. Please note, however, that it is always advisable to seek professional help for the treatment of depression and it should always be remembered that it is dangerous to stop taking medication abruptly without the knowledge of the prescribing doctor. Dietary advice A low fat and low animal protein diet, eliminating sugar,
salt, coffee and alcohol should be followed. In addition, the diet should
contain plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, a number of complex carbohydrate
foods.
