DERMATITIS

General condition information:

Contact dermatitis is an acute superficial inflammation of the skin. It can be caused by an irritant of either animal or mineral origin. There are also a number of plants, such as ivy, chrysanthemum and especially primula, which can bring on dermatitis. Sometimes fruits or vegetables can be the cause. It is also important not to overlook the possibility of hair dyes, hair lacquers, certain face creams or lipsticks. Material used in clothing can also be a causative factor.

Neuro dermatitis, sometimes referred to as Lichen simplex, is a chronic superficial inflammation of the skin, which produces thickened, dry, demarcated plaques of an irregular oval shape.

Dermatitis medicamenosa can cause an eruption of the skin and the mucous membranes.

Many skin conditions can arise due to vitamin deficiencies, excessive stress or an impaired immune system. A sensible, healthy diet, aided by relaxation, adequate exercise, and herbal remedies can all be effective in treating dermatitis.

Dietary advice

I would strongly advise sufferers to refrain from using coffee, tea or chocolate. Ensure that the diet is rich in foods containing B complex vitamins, eg. Wheatflakes, muesli, porridge oats, bananas, nuts, raisins, meat, liver, green vegetables, pulses, beans, rice and dried fruit.

Exercise

Find a quiet room, put on some soothing music, and sit or lie down, so that you are comfortable. Remove your shoes and loosen any tight clothing. Start by tightening up all your muscles as follows, clench your fists, try to press the back of your wrists against your shoulders, hunch your shoulders, clench your teeth, press the tip of your tongue to the roof of the mouth, and frown hard. Push your head back against the chair or bed.

Take a deep breath, flatten the stomach, squeeze the buttocks together, stretch the legs and point the toes. Hold this tension for a slow count of five.

Now let go. Allow the muscles to flop. Notice the difference between tension and relaxation in the muscles. Keep the breathing light and, each time you inhale, feel more tension flowing from the body which is growing warmer and heavier.
