| DIVERTICULITIS &
DIVERTICULOSIS General condition information:
Diverticula are the mucosal sacculations, which protrude from the intestinal lumen to the bowel wall, and are commonly found in the colon, particularly the sigmoid. If there are no complications the disorder is described as diverticulosis, but when there is inflammation it is referred to as diverticulitis. Diverticulosis is a weakening of the bowel wall penetrated by blood vessels. The fully developed diverticula have spherical pouches, which are connected to the intestinal lumen by narrow necks. Problems here can be the result of an irritable colon or increased colonic pressure. Diverticulitis has been described as a left-sided appendicitis, and pain, swelling, nausea, vomiting and fever are possible symptoms. Dietary advice Fibre must be increased and flatulence and bloated feelings
should be avoided. Garlic should be gradually introduced to the diet,
as it has tremendous antiseptic and cleansing properties.
