| EMPHYSEMA General condition information:
Emphysema is a localised condition that has developed into an acute or chronic loss of elasticity and overdistension of the pulmonary alveoli. These become distorted and can sometimes rupture or allow air to enter into the tissues. These are many kinds of emphysema, the most common being the peribronchial or bronchioli obstruction, which is mainly associated with chronic bronchitis or asthma. In cases of emphysema the lungs are somewhat dry and prone to collapse, with subsequent damage to the thorax. The impaired vascular problems and impaired circulation experienced by many emphysema patients can also contribute to an inadequate supply and transportation of oxygen. Many emphysema patients also become easily fatigued and suffer from insomnia and lack of appetite. Dietary advice It is recommended that patients undergoing long-term
steroid treatment follow a well-balanced diet rich in minerals such as
calcium, magnesium and silicea. They should take care to eat plenty of
yogurt, vegetables (both raw and cooked), sesame and/or sunflower seeds.
Products containing white sugar and white flour should be kept to a minimum.
Dairy food, where possible, should be avoided.
