FORGETFULNESS

General condition information:

Forgetfulness can be combated by improving the ability to concentrate. This will enable the brain to function at its best. If the greatest use is to be made of the capacity of the brain, it is important that you should select those items from your everyday life to which it will be most useful for you to devote your attention. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to do this. Certain experiences by reason of their vividness or intensity, force themselves into your field of attention , to the exclusion of everything else. Abnormally loud noises, bright colours and unusual occurrences attract your attention and focus. However, you can learn to control and focus your attention, as well as concentrate upon work which you need to do . Do not handicap yourself by tolerating an environment full of minor and unnecessary distractions. In addition, a healthy body, free from ills and pains, is a valuable aid to controlled attention, as is a mind clear of fears, inferiority feelings and anxieties.

Dietary advice

If you have difficulty in training your attention on any subject you wish, give yourself practice in observation every day. Try and fix in your mind the order and types of the shops in your nearest high street. Make a point of noticing the distinctive mannerisms of your friends. Make yourself observe the colour of their eyes and hair, the shape of their hands and nails. You will soon find that your interest is aroused and your powers of attention will automatically grow.

From time to time ask a friend to cover a small table with a number of miscellaneous objects – a penknife, a cigarette box, a reel of cotton, a pair of gloves for example. Look at the table for a given period of time – say five, ten or fifteen seconds. Go away and write down everything you saw on the table. This will serve to test your observation and train memory retention and recall at the same time.
