GASTROENTERITIS & FOOD POISONING

General condition information:

Gastroenteritis is an acute inflammation of the lining of the stomach and the intestines. Usually the first signs are nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, flu symptoms, a distended abdomen and intestinal wind. There are various strains of gastroenteritis, such as chronic gastroenteritis or food poisoning, which is often caused by ingesting food that has been contaminated by certain bacteria.

Dietary advice

We should always consider food hygiene – it is the key to good health. Food must be stored under the correct conditions, whether it be fresh, preserved, tinned or in a frozen state. Food can be contaminated in more ways than one; it is not only eggs or exotic cheeses, which can cause problems, but also unpasteurised milk, mouldy or unripe food, and only too often fruit that has not been washed properly. Too many people have had cause to regret that they overlooked or under-rated what they considered a minor point of hygiene.

With a bout of food poisoning, immediate fasting if often beneficial. Take plenty of fluids and stay in bed, after which light and easily digested food can be gradually introduced.
