| GOUT General condition information:
Gout is an intensely painful disease which often attacks small joints, especially those in the toes. The victims of this affliction are mostly male. When the uric acid levels are high, the blood cannot contain the solution. Uric acid will start its crystallisation process and the lymphocytes – the white blood cells whose job it is to remove the foreign matter – attack these crystals. The uric acid crystals will be enveloped by lymphocytes which attempt to break them down chemically and digest them. This is totally impossible as the sharp crystals rupture the cells and destructive liquids are released, destroying the cell itself and also surrounding cells. The fluids released from the white cells attack the bone joints causing gouty arthritis and considerable swelling. Gout may be caused by an inherent defect of purine metabolism in which uric acid appears in excess in the tissues. The resulting attacks are extremely painful and occur most often in the joints of the big toe. Dietary advice Purine-rich foods such as meat, fish, chocolates, peanuts, alcohol, as well as sugar and salt, should be limited. In addition, citrus fruits, refined white flour and sugar, eggs, cheese and milk should also be avoided. Smoking can be a contributory factor and should be discontinued. Gout sufferers should take care of their kidneys and hence, should ensure that they take plenty of fluids. Drinking the juice of a raw potato, first thing in the morning, can also be beneficial.
