HIATUS HERNIA

General condition information:

There are two types of hiatus hernia: the sliding type and the para-oesophageal type. The sliding type of hernia slips up into the chest and can cause very considerable discomfort, with burping and food repeating itself. This type of hernia is not a major medicinal problem and can often be treated by a healthy dietary approach, by eating small meals very slowly and masticating the food thoroughly.

The para-oesophageal hiatus hernia is medically much more serious. Although sometimes no larger than a minor hairline crack, severe discomfort and considerable damage can be the result. Quite often in such cases, surgery will have to be performed, but it is not an easy operation since a disproportionately large part of the body requires to be opened up.

Dietary advice

Saliva is an excellent digestive agent; many cases of hiatus hernia are self-inflicted because of hastily eaten food. By chewing slowly and thoroughly, you will ensure that food is digested properly. It is also better for hiatus hernia sufferers to eat six small meals throughout the day rather than three large meals.
