HOT FLUSHES

General condition information:

What actually causes hot flushes? Their sudden occurrence is an outward sign of a natural process women pass through in their late forties. The end of menstrual periods and increased sensitivity to extremes of heat and cold can cause the entire body to become hot and flushed. This experience can last for quite some time and, especially during the night, these flushes can be quite extreme. It is not unusual to hear a woman claim that she feels bathed in sweat.

When the output of natural oestrogen, produced by the ovaries, begins to decrease, it is hoped that this decrease of oestrogen is gradual, in which case the symptoms are likely to be less severe. During hot flushes there is a rapid decrease of oestrogen and exacerbating that with bad dietary habits, or by drinking or smoking, will influence the situation detrimentally. It is even worse when women in the menopause become uninterested in food. They become thin and sometimes almost anorexic, and the symptoms will go from bad to worse.

However, paying attention to the diet, surroundings, as well as using herbal and homoeopathic medicines, the situation can be brought under control.

Dietary advice

Avoid hotly spiced meals, alcohol, nicotine and excessive heat. It is better to eat small meals, but perhaps increase the number of meals taken during the day.
