| INFLUENZA General condition information:
Too often we dismiss influenza as“only a bug”. Let’s not forget that influenza is a highly contagious and acute disease caused by a virus. Symptoms will include fever, aches and pains and an inflammation of the respiratory mucous membranes. During the course of an attack of influenza the body’s temperature can rise to 101°F (38.3°C) or even 103°F (39.4°C) and it is this rise in temperature that is often the most worrying factor. However, the body needs to pass through a healing crisis in order to fight and overcome the invaders that have attacked our general health. In naturopathy it is believed that it is not so much the germ as the condition of the individual’s general health that matters. Influzena, according to naturopathic understanding, can be regarded as a self-cleansing procedure. The body is attempting to rid itself of toxic and alien material, which it considers did not belong there in the first place. Dietary advice While the fever rages a fasting program should be followed. As long as the patient drinks plenty of fluids, the fever will eventually begin to abate. An all fruit and/or liquid diet is advised. By following such a diet the body will eliminate much toxic matter and a thorough cleansing will be achieved. Under such conditions the digestive system is especially sluggish and the absorption of food will be much more difficult. It is advisable, therefore, to avoid eggs, fish, meat and cheese, all of which will be found difficult to digest. Instead, take more fruit juices. Remember to select fruit juices that are low in acid, so grape or blackcurrant juice would be an excellent choice. Porridge oats will be excellent for strengthening the nervous system. Cold water treatment The following treatment is suitable for influenza patients running a very high temperature. Take a large towel and immerse in ice-cold water. Wrap the towel around the naked patient and leave for five minutes. Remedies Please remember that if you are taking any prescribed medication or have a medical problem, you should consult your own medical practitioner before starting any new course of treatment.
