LUMBAR SPINE

General condition information:

The symptoms of lower back pains vary and are often due to a general lack of exercise. A sedentary life puts strain on the lumbar spine if and when exercise is taken. Weakness of the lumbar spine may also be due to dietary mismanagement. Incorrect use of the spine may then be the cause of difficulties, when the patient is sometimes subjected to severe pain and distress. This pain can involve spasms, stabbing pains, pains down one or both legs and this altogether can result in a debilitating discomfort; even to the extent that I have seen patients enter the clinic bent double to an unbelievable degree.

Many of these lower-back pains or, if worse, sciatica, relate to degenerative joints disease. In bad cases, it is usually due to a fracture or an infection. Back pains may also occur because of obesity or during pregnancy, when the weight distribution temporarily alters and therefore the back is put under stress.

Lumbar spinal complaints are sometimes confused with sciatica, but rather then sciatica, the complaints are more often cases of compression or contraction of the spine. Afflictions such as lumbago and spinal stenosis can cause severe problems in the lumbar spine, as can, of course, arthritic conditions.

Lumbar Complaints

One of the most common lumbar complaints is a ‘slipped disc’. This arises when the cartilage ring is damage allowing fluid to escape, resulting in spasms around the surrounding area. The inability of the disc to act as a shock absorber is then greatly impaired and stiffness, a degree of immobility and severe pain is the result.

Neuritis or inflammation of the nerves may attack not only the legs or the lumbar spine, but also the arms, wrists, shoulders, fingers, etc. Arnica is excellent is alleviating inflammation for this particular problem, along with electro-acupuncture.

Sciatica will arise when excess pressure is experienced on the sciatic nerve, resulting in pins and needles through to excruciating pain radiating down through the buttocks and legs. Again, electro-acupuncture treatment is usually beneficial in easing inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

Lumbago is a painful condition of the lumbar muscles caused by inflammation of the fibrous sheaths. Frequently, it will also affect the urinary tract and in such instances, acupuncture, along with herbal remedies for the kidneys, is of excellent help.
