How often should you oil your hair?
First off, if your hair is naturally oily then it will only add to the problem if you put oily products on top. Therefore, in this case it is best to stay clear of oil-based hair care products altogether and opt for something else instead such as Dr Hauschka’s Revitalising Hair and Scalp Tonic. This balances any excessive oil production to leave the hair looking smooth, shiny and oil-free. That’s not all though, the all-natural ingredients also strengthen hair to prevent damage and split ends.
Although other hair types can benefit from using oils regularly, that does not mean you should pile them on every day! Overloading your hair with products can weigh down the hair and may make it look greasy. So, if your hair is anything from dry to curly, don’t be afraid to give oils a go but make sure you are not using them more than two to three times a week.
Oiling your hair – dry hair
Now that you know how often to use oil in your hair, you may be wondering which products to turn to. Well, here at Jan de Vries we have a range of options including Coconut Merchant’s Organic Raw Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. This moisturises dry hair, adding a shine and softness that is hard to find in other products. That’s not all though, it also prevents hair breakage and split ends thus contributing to hair length – wow!
To apply coconut oil simply take a small amount and work it with your hands until it softens. From here you can begin to apply it to your hair using a comb as this will ensure it is evenly distributed. It is best to follow this process at night so that the oil has time to be absorbed and then when the morning comes you can simply rinse it all out in the shower.
Oiling your hair – dandruff
The harsh chemicals in hair care products, as well as regular shampooing, can contribute to the problem of dandruff. This occurs when skin cells dry out and then shed in flakes from the scalp.
Here at Jan de Vries we’re big fans of John Masters’ 100% Argan Oil because as well as improving the health and appearance of both the skin and hair, this can also be used to address dandruff. Argan oil is ground from the kernels of argan trees which are native to Morocco. It is rich in antioxidants such as vitamin E, as well as omega 6 which can improve the appearance of the skin and hair. As well as this though, argan oil also has a moisturising effect meaning it can help to hydrate the skin and reduce the prominence of dandruff. Therefore, instead of relying on anti-dandruff shampoos, this popular product by John Masters gives you something else to try!
To apply argan oil put a few drops in your hands and then massage it into your hair and scalp - you only need a very small amount here as too much will make your hair look greasy. Once the oil is distributed throughout your hair, wrap it in a towel for as long as possible to allow the oil to be absorbed by your hair.
Oiling your hair – coloured hair
Just as hair care products can damage your hair, regularly colouring can too and so that’s why we’d recommend using an oil to counteract this. Once again we turn to Dr Hauschka for a suitable product here, with this time the focus being on their Strengthening Hair Treatment. This all-natural product renews and strengthens hair follicles to encourage healthier and softer hair.
Like most of our oils this is really easy to apply! Put a little on the hair and then massage it through until all areas are covered. Next, take a warm towel and wrap your hair in it then leave for twenty minutes or so - this will give your hair time to soak up the product. Afterwards you must remember to rinse your hair so this product may be best used when you have a little time to spare!
Oiling your hair - All hair types
Finally, if you are looking for oil that is suitable for all hair types then you needn’t look further than Green People’s Hair Serum with Quinoa and Avocado. Here quinoa protein encourages shinier, bouncier and more voluminous hair whilst avocado oil is rich in antioxidants that can reverse any damage made by the likes of straighteners.
To apply this serum simply rub a little in your hands and then work through your hair, taking care to make sure all areas are covered. Alternatively, you could apply this product to damp hair and then, once dried, simply style as you normally would.
