What does activated charcoal do?

Activated charcoal is fast becoming a must have beauty product but if you have never used it before or, indeed if you have never heard of it, the idea of incorporating it into your hair or skin care regime may seem a little puzzling. After all, isn’t charcoal usually set aside for use on the BBQ and fireplace? Well, today I clear up some of the mystery surrounding activated charcoal by looking at what it is, how it works and what benefits it can bring.

What is it?

First of all, let’s just make it clear that activated charcoal is not the same as the stuff you might use to cook your sausages. Instead activated charcoal is a thin powder that comes about when regular charcoal is heated to a very high temperature. After this step the powder is then treated with oxygen to increase its surface area which enables it to absorb toxins and other substances. From here activated charcoal is incorporated into a variety of products, from toothpaste to shampoo!

How does it work?

Activated charcoal is extremely absorbent meaning it is able to bind to other substances such as dirt and oil to facilitate their removal from an area.

What is it used for?

Skin – activated charcoal helps to remove dirt, oil, chemicals, bacteria and toxins that build up on the skin however, it is also well-known for its anti-aging properties

Teeth – just as it absorbs unwanted particles from the skin, activated charcoal also helps to get rid of plaque, bacteria and stains on the teeth and gums. Not only that though, it can also tackle bad breath, cavities and gum disease too

Hair – activated charcoal cleanses the hair of impurities socan improve the health and appearance of it

Bloating – this nifty ingredient also comes in tablet formand taken this way it can relieve bloating, flatulence and discomfort.

Where can I find it?

If you’d like to try activated charcoal out for yourself then here at Jan de Vries we have a few products to suggest.

First of all, Optima have an activated charcoal range for the skin and hair including a cleansing facial scrub and a purifying shampoo.

The shampoo is ideal for dull or lifeless hair because not only does it get rid of dirt and oil, it also adds volume to the hair as well. That’s because the product contains organic plant and fruit extracts such as Aloe Vera and Grapefruit which contribute to vibrant-looking locks. The facial scrub on the other hand, contains Aloe Vera juice, coconut oil and cucumber alongside activated charcoal which leaves the skin feeling smooth and fresh.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous then My White Secret has an activated charcoal teeth whitening kit. As I’ve already mentioned, this kind of product removes plaque, cleanses the mouth, prevents bad breath and strengthens teeth too. It has a natural minty flavour that comes from the addition of peppermint oil so there’s absolutely no hint of charcoal if you’re worried about that!
