Is activated charcoal the secret to healthy skin?

You may be more familiar with using charcoal to heat up your BBQ but really this is a highly versatile ingredient that needn’t be confined to grilling sausages or toasting marshmallows! Due to its beneficial properties, charcoal has recently begun to infiltrate the world of beauty and skin care. However, not any old charcoal will do, the stuff in face masks, body washes and even shampoo is called activated charcoal. Here I discuss what that is and update you on all the other ways charcoal could improve your skin!

What is activated charcoal?

You often see activated charcoal included in skin care products but without further information, it can seem a bit of a mystery as to what this actually is. Well, let me clear this up!

Activated charcoal is a thin powder that comes about when charcoal is warmed to a very high temperature. This charcoal is then treated with a chemical such as oxygen which increases its surface area and enables it to absorb toxins and other substances. At this stage it becomes activated and is entered into various skin care products such as Optima’s Activated Charcoal range.

How does activated charcoal help the skin?

There are a host of benefits to using this unusual skin care ingredient which explains exactly why it has grown so rapidly in the industry. It can help those with oily skin for example, as it works to remove impurities such as oil and dirt from the skin which build up as we go about our day-to-day lives. This cleansing action leaves the skin feeling soft, as well as refreshed. Also, in helping to rid the skin of oil, activated charcoal helps to fight mild acne.

That’s not all though, because activated charcoal absorbs toxins on the skin, it is also used in many anti-aging products to give the skin a smoother texture.

If you’d like to see the benefits of activated charcoal on the skin for yourself, there are a host of products you can try including Optima’s Activated Charcoal Purifying Face Mask. This contains a mix of activated charcoal, China Clay, Aloe Vera juice and Echinacea which together provide the skin with a host of nutrients. However, these ingredients are also incredibly soothing and help to brighten the skin after use.

If this doesn’t take your fancy, another option is their Activated Charcoal Purifying Body Wash  which also helps to remove oil and dirt from the skin. With an ingredient list that includes Aloe Vera, Cucumber and Chamomile, this special body wash soothes the skin and gives it a warm glow too!

So, if you’re looking for a natural, if slightly more unusual skin care product, activated charcoal is the place to turn!

Is activated charcoal used in other products?

Activated charcoal doesn’t just benefit the skin and is, in fact, included in a variety of products. It is increasingly being used in shampoos and conditioner for example, as it cleanses the hair and scalp. This removes dirt and oil from the area, helping to give the hair a soft texture and adding volume to it as well.

Again, if you want to give this a go you can turn to Optima’s Activated Charcoal Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner.  As well as helping to improve the appearance of hair, these contain a unique blend of organic plant extracts such as Argan Oil and Aloe Vera juice which moisturise the hair and provide it with many beneficial nutrients.

Activated charcoal doesn’t just benefit your skin and hair though, it can even improve the health and appearance of your teeth! Ok, so you’re not entirely convinced by this one are you? Well, let me explain.

A variety of toothpaste with activated charcoal in it will absorb plaque and bacteria, as well as stains on the teeth and gums. This means it can help fight bad breath, gum disease and, with continued use, it may even prevent you needing those dreaded fillings! What’s more, the absorbing action of activated charcoal also whitens the teeth to improve their overall appearance.

Are you convinced yet?
