Good morning beautiful skin!
When we wake up in the morning our first thought isn’t always our skin, and, let’s be honest who has time for a complicated and long skincare routine? However, that doesn’t mean that your skincare routine should fly out the window in the morning! Try our simple steps below using PHB’s all-natural products and your skin will feel nourished and refreshed in no time for the day ahead!
Step 1: Exfoliate using a gentle facial scrub
Why? When it comes to dry skin your first instinct may be to pile on the moisturiser however, this often doesn’t help very much! In order to hydrate your skin, you first have to remove the dry and dead skin cells that often build up on dry skin. And what’s the best way to do this? Exfoliate!
Exfoliating helps remove dead cells from pores which makes them appear smaller and, by removing this build up, you help your skin to be able to better absorb other nutrients that you put on in the form of moisturisers, serums and oils.
Our favourite exfoliator for dry skin? PHB’s Brightening Jojoba Bead Exfoliator with Grapefruit & Kukui! It’s important to use a scrub that is designed for facial use because body scrubs contain much larger, harsher granules that are made for the tougher, thicker skin on the rest of the body.
We love PHB’s Brightening Exfoliator because it contains a nutrient-rich blend of Grapefruit and Organic Kukui to gently lift away dead skin cells to reveal brighter looking skin. The Organic Kukui Oil contains high concentrations of Omega 3 and 6 as well as vitamins A, D and E to instantly hydrate and soften your complexion. The Organic Grapefruit is combined with Lavender and Tea Tree to help boost circulation and to rid skin of toxins.
PHB use 100% natural and ethically sourced ingredients in their products and share our love of looking after our planet. Rather than containing environmentally damaging plastic microbeads this friendly scrub contains jojoba beads to provide a gentle exfoliation that is not only good for your skin but is good for the earth too!
How often? Just because exfoliators can help to instantly remove dry skin this doesn’t mean that you should use them all the time. For dry skin we’d recommend that you use an exfoliator no more than 3 times a week as using an exfoliator more often than this can cause skin sensitivity, particularly if you have dry skin.
Try alternating your Brightening Exfoliator with another of PHB’s cleansers such as their Gentle Cleanser which contains Olive and Plum to help nourish and heal damaged skin whilst also encouraging skin to retain moisture. This natural blend of ingredients provides a gentle cleanse without damaging or drawing out moisture.
Step 2: Apply a nourishing tonic
Why? Face tonics are a fantastic addition for a dry skincare routine! Tonics are best used after a cleanser to help balance out the pH levels in your skin. What are pH levels and what do they have to do with your skin? Your pH levels refer to the acid/alkaline balance in your body and, actually, the skin is one of the more acidic areas which can easily become disrupted through our diet and the use of products that may not work well with our skin.
Tonics clean and tighten pores which not only makes skin visibly smoother but also make it more difficult for dirt to collect there. Finally, tonics can also provide an extra layer of hydration giving your skin an extra little boost when it needs it.
Our favourite tonic for dry skin? PHB’s Hydrating Facial Tonic with Ylang Ylang! This alcohol-free and oil-free toner doesn’t strip away moisture but adds it through the botanical power of Ylang Ylang. It’s also super versatile and can be used after cleansing, before and after makeup application or any time your skin is feeling tired, stressed or overheated. Try keeping this toner in the fridge for an instant skin refresh on those super-hot summer days!
How often? It’s important not to overdo it on the toner because overuse can trick your skin into overproducing excess oil – even for dry skin! So, for dry skin I’d suggest using a toner once a day and increasing this to twice daily if you feel as though you need a little boost such as during winter.
Step 3: Moisturise with a nutrient rich facial moisturiser
Why? Moisturiser is an absolute must in any skincare routine but it’s important to take the time to find a moisturiser that works for your skin type! What makes it tricky is that there are hundreds and hundreds of moisturisers out there – and not all of them are good for your skin!
There are three main types of moisturiser out there; humectants, occlusive and emollients. Occlusive moisturisers are known as barrier creams and leave a film on the surface of skin to seal in moisture. Emollients such as fatty acids aim to soften and soothe skin. Finally, humectants attract water and help skin retain moisture.
Moisturisers can help protect the skin and prevent it from becoming too oily or too dry. When it comes to dry skin protection from wind, cold temperatures, heated houses are extremely important as these can all dehydrate skin leaving it itchy and dry.
Our favourite moisturiser for dry skin? PHB’s Hydrating Moisturiser with Frankincense and Sandalwood! The nourishing combination of frankincense and sandalwood lock in moisture to help keep skin beautifully hydrated – the perfect remedy for dry skin! The additional antioxidants and vitamins in this moisturise work to promote healthy skin renewal and resist signs of ageing caused by excessive dryness.
How often? Moisturising regularly can help you to achieve silky soft skin but figuring out how often you should moisturise can take a little bit of trial and error at first. If you have dry skin you will most likely need to moisturise a little bit more regularly than someone with oily or combination skin.
You should always moisturise after using an exfoliator to help replenish any nutrients that were lost in the process. Your skin is much more receptive after exfoliation or bathing so making sure you have a tip top moisturiser with natural ingredients is important as these ingredients will get absorbed directly into the skin and bloodstream.
Most people moisturise at least every day and for dry skin I would even consider upping this to twice daily to give your skin a helping hand to retain as much moisture as possible.
Here at Jan de Vries we like to nourish and look after skin at its source rather than encourage people to cover up with makeup and hide. That being said we do love using and promoting natural makeup that is good for your skin, so we decided to include makeup as an optional extra in your skincare routine for those of you who already wear it. Whether you have dry, oily, sensitive or normal skin, it’s important to find good quality makeup that works for your skin type.
Luckily, PHB have the perfect natural makeup range that, like their skincare products, are completely natural and cruelty-free. PHB Beauty are a UK-based ethical beauty company who create nourishing, natural products that work in harmony with your skin.
