A simple morning skincare routine for normal and combination skin

Establishing a good skincare routine is one of the most important things you can do for your skin but it’s important to not only find a skincare routine that fits in with your busy schedule – but also one that works for your skin type! Here at Jan de Vries we know and love the fact that every single person has a different skin complexion which is why we’ve created an easy and simple morning skincare routine specially tailored for those of you with normal or combination skin.

Good morning beautiful skin!

When we wake up in the morning our first thought isn’t always our skin, and, let’s be honest who has time for a complicated and long skincare routine? However that doesn’t mean that your skincare routine should fly out the window in the morning! Just because you have normal/combination skin that is perhaps less likely to breakout or act up than dry or oily skin doesn’t mean that you should just use any old products on your skin. Try our simple steps below using PHB’s all-natural products to help your skin feel refreshed for the day ahead!

Step 1: Exfoliate using a gentle facial scrub

Why? Almost all skin types benefit from a bit of exfoliation; face scrubs are the perfect way to remove debris and dead skin cells. Your body does a lot of work to keep your skin healthy and part of this process involves constant regeneration of skin cells. Your skin has to work this way because, on average, we shed up to 50,000 dead skin cells every minute! Sometimes our skin can struggle to keep up with this process meaning that some dead skin cells struggle to be removed. This is where exfoliation comes into the picture; gentle exfoliation can help to unclog and release any dead skin cell build up.

Our favourite exfoliator for normal to combination skin? PHB’s Brightening Jojoba Bead Exfoliator with Grapefruit & Kukui! This scrub is a gentle, creamy exfoliator made from all natural ingredients that can be used on all skin types. 100% ethical, cruelty-free and vegan, this scrub works by natural micro-particles made from Jojoba beads rather than using harsh plastic microbeads that can damage your skin as well as the environment. To protect the skin’s natural moisture barrier PHB’s friendly scrub also contains hydrating oils such as Kukui, Grapfruit, Lavender and Green Tea.

How often? It’s important not to over-exfoliate skin – it should be left feeling smooth and soft not red and irritated. If you have normal/combination skin exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week should be enough to give you all the benefits without stripping the skin of essential moisture.

For those days that you aren’t using an exfoliator I’d suggest alternating with PHB’s Brightening Facial Wash with Lime and Turmeric which makes the perfect complimentary partner to their facial scrub. The combination of Lime and Turmeric in this face wash soothes the skin whilst also providing a light hydration and reduced pigmentation for a more even skin tone.

Step 2: Use a toner

Why? A toner is best used after a regular cleanser to help balance out pH levels in your skin. What are pH levels and what do they have to do with your skin? Your pH level refers to the acid/alkaline balance in your body and, actually, the skin is one of the more acidic areas which can easily become disrupted through our diet and through the use of products. Toners clean and tighten pores which not only makes skin visibly smoother but also more difficult for dirt to collect there. Toners can also add an extra layer of hydration giving your skin an extra little boost when it needs it.

Our favourite toner for normal/combination skin? PHB’s Gentle Facial Tonic with Organic Rose!Alcohol-free and oil-free this toner doesn’t strip away any moisture but adds it through the nourishing power of organic Rose. It’s also super versatile and can be used after cleansing, before and after makeup application or any time your skin is feeling tired, stressed or overheated. Why not try keeping this toner in the fridge for an instant skin refresh on those super-hot summer days?

How often? It’s important not to overdo it on the toner because overuse can trick your skin into overproducing excess oil. So, for normal to combination skin I’d suggest using a toner once a day and only increasing this to twice daily if you feel as though you need a little boost now and then.

Step 3: Moisturise to keep your skin hydrated

Why? Moisturiser is an absolute must in any skincare routine but it’s important to take the time to find a moisturiser that works for your skin type! What makes it tricky is that there are hundreds and hundreds of moisturisers out there – and not all of them are good for your skin!

There are three main types of moisturiser out there; humectants, occlusive and emollients. Occlusive moisturisers are known as barrier creams and leave a film on the surface of skin to seal in moisture. Emollients such as fatty acids aim to soften and soothe skin. Finally, humectants attract water and help skin retain moisture. Moisturisers can help protect the skin and prevent it from becoming too oily or too dry.

Our favourite moisturiser for normal and combination skin? PHB’s Brightening moisturiser with Argan and Immortelle!Ingredients like Licorice and Immortelle help to boost and brighten skin giving it a glowing appearance. The nourishing Argan Oil helps soothe, soften and protect skin, without damaging it with nasty chemicals. This lightweight moisturiser is perfect for everyday use; it absorbs quickly and leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated.

How often? Moisturising regularly can help you to achieve silky soft skin but figuring out how often you should moisturise can take a little bit of trial and error at first. Your skin is much more receptive after exfoliation or bathing so I’d recommend applying moisturiser after this process. Making sure you have a tip top moisturiser with natural ingredients is important as these ingredients will get absorbed directly into the skin and bloodstream.

For normal and combination skin I’d suggest moisturising twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening after your cleansing routine.

Makeup?

Here at Jan de Vries we like to nourish and look after skin at its source rather than encourage people to cover up with makeup and hide. That being said we do love using and promoting natural makeup that is also good for your skin, so we decided to include makeup as an optional extra in your skincare routine for those of you who already wear it. Whether you have dry, oily, sensitive or normal skin, it’s important to find good quality makeup that works for your skin type.

Luckily PHB also have the perfect natural makeup range that, like their skincare products, are completely natural and cruelty-free. After you’ve completed your morning skincare routine why not apply PHB’s organic liquid foundation? This skin-loving liquid foundation is available in a variety of skin tones from extremely fair to extremely tanned and is the perfect natural alternative to conventional foundations.

PHB pride themselves on making foundations that blur the line between makeup and skincare; this liquid foundation is made with completely organic ingredients and offers long-lasting and full coverage alongside a light and silky texture that doesn’t clog pores. What’s more their foundations are suitable for any and all skin types – even sensitive skin and acne! They certainly have our vote!
