Our 5 favourite products to help relieve bloating

Gill @JdeV Auchterarder store

Bloating is a temporary swelling of the stomach that is often caused by stuck air around the abdomen area; it can be extremely uncomfortable and can sometimes be indicative of another digestive disorder such as IBS. There are many reasons for bloating – from stress and diet to fluid retention and excess gas, odds are you’ve experienced it before. We have a wealth of products here at Jan de Vries that could help relieve bloating, but it is sometimes difficult to know where to start which is why I’ve listed my top 5 favourites below.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live microorganisms that aim to transfer good health benefits on to us; they are often referred to as our friendly gut bacteria. They help to balance out the bad gut bacteria in our digestive tract and can aid in digestion and potentially help prevent gas and bloating. Maintaining the balance between good and bad gut bacteria is thought to be essential in keeping a strong and healthy immune and digestive systems. If you want more information on probiotics why not check out my article Why are probiotics so important?

We love OptiBac’s wide range of probiotics, as they have probiotics tailored to different needs. Included in their range are probiotics for travelling abroad, cholesterol, and immune function as well as probiotics suited for digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhoea.

Our favourite probiotic for bloating is OptiBac’s Probiotics One Week Flat. This one week course of probiotics contains 4 different strains of bacteria and 5 billion live cultures. These probiotics are gluten free so are a good option for those of us who suffer from bloating related to gluten intolerances.

Herbal Remedies

One of the major benefits about using herbal remedies is that they generally have less negative side effects than pharmaceuticals because they are natural and can be found in nature.

For bloating, indigestion or flatulence I’d suggest A. Vogel’s Digestisan. Digestisan is a licensed herbal remedy that contains fresh extracts of Artichoke, Dandelion, Peppermint and dried Boldo leaves. It helps to support healthy digestion and relieve symptoms of indigestion such as abdominal discomfort and bloating.

Tea

We love a good cuppa here at Jan de Vries – herbal, green, black – you name it, we have it! We’ve got tea for every occasion and, luckily for you, we have lots of great digestive-aiding blends for you to choose from!

If you’re not sure which one to try first, I would recommend starting with Pukka’s After Dinner Herbal Tea, part of Pukka’s Digestif collection, to help relieve bloating. Pukka’s Digestif collection are based on traditional Ayurvedic formulas to help rejuvenate and restore your digestive system.

As the name suggests, this tea is the perfect drink to have after a heavy meal. Specially made with spicy cardamom, liquorice, and roasted chicory this herbal tea helps support digestion and ease bloating as well as other symptoms of indigestion.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a wonder-herb with a whole bunch of great health benefits. It can help period cramps, can work as a decongestant, ease headaches, and help bad breath. It has great benefits for our digestive health to: it can help to relieve IBS symptoms, encourages good digestion and – you guessed it – helps to relieve bloating. So how does peppermint achieve all of these wonderful effects? Well, most of peppermint’s effects are achieved by its muscle-relaxant properties. It relaxes the muscles of your intestines which, in turn helps to reduce bloating and gas.

Most dietary experts claim that the best way to take peppermint is in tea format. One way to make your own tea is to buy fresh peppermint at your local supermarket or health food store and then to infuse it with hot water. If that sounds like too much hassle for a cuppa I would suggest trying Dragonfly’s Organic Pure Peppermint Tea which contains nothing but 100% organic peppermint leaf.

Aloe Vera

You are probably familiar with the benefits of using Aloe Vera on the skin for problems such as sunburn and acne, but did you know that it also has digestive benefits?

Aloe Vera acts as the perfect vehicle to transport essential nutrients to cell; it enhances the absorption of nutrients and soothes the digestive system. Rich in nutrients, Aloe Vera can help balance digestive juices and clear inflammation of the digestive tract.

We have plenty of Aloe Vera juice to choose from here at Jan de Vries but I’d recommend starting with Aloe Pura’s Aloe Vera Digestive Aid Juice. Containing unfiltered Aloe Vera inner leaf gel, peppermint and fennel we think this is the perfect Aloe Vera juice to help soothe your digestive system and prevent bloating. This Aloe Vera juice is also specially formulated with digestive enzymes to help support and rejuvenate digestive health.

And, if you love Aloe Pura’s Aloe Vera Digestive Aid Juice as much as we do, then you’ll be please to know that they have a wide range of Aloe Vera juices and supplements for you to choose from! One of my favourites includes their Aloe Vera Colon Cleanse juice. Enriched with flaxseed fibre and natural plant products this juice helps to support and cleanse the colon and increases your body’s ability to absorb essential vitamins and nutrients.
